Waterfall Restaurant

This project is located in the main central courtyard of the Iran Mall shopping center. The HOOBA Design Studio was asked to redesign an existing structure in this area to accommodate a restaurant, adapting it to meet the functional and aesthetic needs of the space. The initial structure was envisioned as a glass enclosure, which, based on climatic analysis, proved unsuitable due to the direct sunlight exposure in this location. Additionally, providing unobstructed views of the courtyard’s water feature was one of the client’s priorities for the restaurant. The key design question was how to enhance the visual quality of the courtyard while improving the spatial experience of the restaurant. The aim was to create a seamless blend of landscaped areas and indoor seating spaces, resulting in a unique integration of nature and architecture. The roof played a pivotal role in the design, as it needed to offer an engaging visual feature when viewed from within the shopping center. To address these requirements, the geometric form of the project was derived from arches based on the existing structural framework. These arches act as a layered canopy over the spaces below, with sections cut at angles to align with the sun’s trajectory. These cuts allow varying levels of sunlight to penetrate at different times of the day, creating semi-open spaces and integrating greenery into the restaurant. The curved geometry, both inside and outside, is clad in brick. On the roof, a vibrant abstract pattern is created using glazed bricks, transforming the roof into a visually engaging element when seen from the surrounding shopping center. The design integrates greenery with the reflective qualities of the glazed brick, enhancing the interplay of light and color within the space. Ultimately, the project aims to evoke the skyline of Iran’s desert cities, with its dynamic arches and earthy tones, reimagined within the modern context of the Iran Mall.
